Modelling Foam

XPS modelling foam
Make My Model are distributors of the blue extruded polystyrene (XPS) Dow Styrofoamfoam and other brands of XPS foam. Our range of extruded polystyrene foam is ideal for use as a modelling foam. Our XPS foam boards are lightweight with a high compressive strength rating. The unique closed cell structure/cell shape of our XPS foam results in no voids between cells, the result of an exclusive extrusion process that assures uniform, predictable, stable physical properties.

Our range of XPS foam is a thermoplastic and retreats from fire. It also contains a flame retardant additive to inhibit accidental ignition from small fire sources eg., over-heated wires or welding sparks. The cell structure of our XPS foam enables it to resits all forms of water and moisture penetration.

Our XPS foam is chemically and physiologically inert, it creates no dust and will not support mould or mildew and is non allergenic. XPS foam is not a known food source to vermin or insects.  To purchase modelling foam please visit our on-line store

Cutting and Shaping
Due to the homogeneous cell structure and uniform density of our XPS modelling foam it can be cut accurately and to very close tolerances. Our XPS modelling foam is easy to cut and shape with a range of tools including our range of Hot Wire Foam Factory tools or simple manual tools like a serrated knife, hacksaw, floral knife or X-Acto knife. To cut a thick piece, or several sheets stacked together, try using an old electric knife.

Our XPS modelling foam can be painted with an acrylic craft and/or water based paint. Avoid using solvent based paints as these may damage the foam. Some spray paints are safe to use - read the label carefully to determine whether or not it is foam approved.

For a fast, sure bond, use our range of Hot Wire Foam Factory adhesives and coatings. You can also use a low-temperature glue gun (using a non-solvent base such as an epoxy resin and/or polyurethane adhesive) which can be purchased from your local hardware store.

There is no such thing as a
Styrofoam Coffee Cup!
The Styrofoam brand name is often misused as a generic term for disposable foam products such as coffee cups, coolers and packaging materials. However, there isn't a coffee cup, cooler or packaging material in the world made from actual Styrofoam extruded polystyrene (XPS) foam. These disposable foam products are usually made from expanded polystyrene foam (also known as EPS or beadboard). Styrofoam has a unique closed cell structure which allows for a close tolerance when cutting and shaping. Styrofoam has an extremely high strength-to-weight ratio.
